What does a civil engineer do, anyway?

Civil engineers are responsible for the planning and supervision of construction and maintenance of building and infrastructure projects. At Tekton, our civil engineers are able to provide expertise and guidance to ensure our clients and community meet their project goals in a safe, cost effective and aesthetically pleasing manner. In simple terms, civil engineering is the physical and scientific process for solving infrastructure problems and needs.

Tekton’s civil engineers oversee things like grading and stormwater management, drainage systems and storm sewers. They are responsible for making sure the proper checks and balances are in place to keep these systems working.

Grading

When we talk about grading, we are referring to the process of rearranging a site in order to create slopes and levels that meet your project's needs. Grading ensures that drainage systems can be properly installed, as well as providing a safer environment for people and vehicles. Proper grading also helps with stormwater management by directing water runoff away from structures and preventing localized flooding. Grading is all part of the civil engineer’s job.

Storm Sewers & Storm Water Collection Systems

Storm sewers are the underground channels that collect surface water from roads, parking lots, and other drainage areas. Storm sewers are important because they efficiently direct water through and away from a site without damaging other infrastructure. Storm water detention/retention systems are used to collect, store, and treat storm water in a manner that prevents flooding and improves water quality. Planning storm sewers and collection systems is also a big part of a civil engineer’s job.

Civil engineering duties may also vary depending on the industry and these are just a couple examples of the type of work our civil engineers at Tekton do.
